Ohio Celebrates a Game of Foot Ball

On May 3, 1890, a group of Ohio State students rose early, boarded their horse-drawn wagons and made the 20-mile trip along the Olentangy River from Columbus to Delaware, the home of Ohio Wesleyan University, to play what that day’s Delaware Gazette described as “the first game of Rugby foot ball.”
Ohio State and Ohio Wesleyan now occupy opposite ends of the college football spectrum. The Buckeyes, whose Columbus campus has an enrollment in excess of 52,000, play in a stadium that seats more than 100,000 and field a team of players with N.F.L. aspirations. The Battling Bishops, who draw from a student body of 1,850, play in a stadium less than a tenth the size and offer no football scholarships. But the universities’ football programs began together on that spring morning 118 years ago.
The site of that first game was a mystery until last year, when Dick Gordin, a former Ohio Wesleyan athletic director who has studied the history of the university’s sports teams, uncovered a letter written by one player in that 1890 game, describing the playing field near a creek called Delaware Run. This weekend, Ohio Wesleyan has scheduled a ceremony to install a historical marker at the site, with dignitaries from both universities attending.
“Ohio Wesleyan, as the first team Ohio State played, is extremely important to our football history,” said Archie Griffin, the Buckeyes’ two-time Heisman Trophy winner, who was scheduled to attend the dedication. “They really got it started for Ohio State.”
The teams played for the final time in 1932, when Ohio State won, 34-7, ending the series with 26-2-1 advantage. By then, the Buckeyes were playing Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Battling Bishops were playing Wittenberg and DePauw.
Ohio Wesleyan was an important part of the early days of college football. In 1897, it gave Fielding Yost, a founding father of the sport, his first coaching job. In 1906, it was a charter member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (later renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association). Ohio Wesleyan has played Ohio State more than any other Ohio team.
“The two schools both started out as Midwest football powers in the late 19th century, early 20th century,” Roger Ingles, the athletic director at Ohio Wesleyan, said. “The first game that Ohio State ever played was at Ohio Wesleyan, and we were the first visiting team to play at Ohio Stadium in 1922. A lot of our past has been intertwined.”
At that first game in 1890, the ball was round, forward passes were outlawed, touchdowns were worth 4 points and “goals after touchdown” worth 2. Wedges — plays in which players locked elbows and ran into each other en masse, often causing serious injuries — were commonplace. Players wore no pads.
Gordin said: “In those days, it looked more like a rugby game, where they have the scrums with the players down close to each other and push each other around, and all at once the ball comes out of there. The biggest problem was the number of injuries.”
Those injuries — and professors’ concerns that students should focus on their classwork — nearly prevented Ohio State’s players from making that trip to Ohio Wesleyan.
“Faculty didn’t want players leaving the campus,” Gordin said. “For Ohio State to come up here and play was a big thing.”
It was big enough that an estimated 700 people attended, watching from a hill overlooking the field. Ohio State won, 20-14, with four touchdowns and two goals after for the men of Columbus against three touchdowns and one goal after for the home team.
The Delaware Gazette reported afterward, “The game was a spirited one, and, from the interest aroused, it is safe to say that foot ball has taken a firm hold upon both students and citizens.”

The Appalachian Effect in N.C.A.A. Football

Remember when the Michigan Wolverines kicked off their football season last year with a loss to Appalachian State University?

Some people called it the biggest upset in college football history.
Well, as Mike Huguenin notes at Rivals.com, it looks like the big-time schools are being a lot more careful this year in picking their supposedly patsy opponents.
Appalachian, meanwhile, is hoping to start the ‘08 season even more outrageously than last year: against the defending national champs L.S.U. It should not be forgotten that Appalachian has won the past three national championships at its level.

Trojan Power: John David Booty (JDB as I like to call him) made the Illinois D look like Swiss Cheese as he and the USC Offense played pitch and catch all day. The totals for USC are pretty staggering as the raked up 633 total yards of the Big O. Again, we end another year with the question..Is USC the best team in the country?

Kegs a flowing: Cheers to New Mexico State U as they ended a 46 year bowl drought by beating Nevada in a shutout. Nevada was last shut out almost 30 years ago.

Go Home: Bowling Green U which lost in the GMAC Bowl followed a horrible trend by MAC teams as the three teams that were represented each lost by 51, 52, and 63 points and finished 0-3. Better luck next year.

Looking forward to the 2008 Season..It’s just never too early.

USC looks again to keep on track as Mark Sanchez will take over for the departing JDB @ QB….The Georgia Bulldogs finished the season as strong as any one is the land and looked impressive in doing so as they beat up on QB Colt Brennen and the Warriors. They might be ranked as high as #2 in the Pre Season polls…LSU will lose Mr. Dorsey to the draft but have ample amount of talent returning coupled with Ryan Perrilloux getting the nod and running the Offense for the next three years. Should be exciting times in Baton Rouge……Gator fans have Superman Tim Tebow returning but they need answers fast for a very suspect Defense that looked terriable down the stretch. OSU, WVU, Clemson, KU, Mizzu, Illinois and Oklahoma all return quality players and will not loose a ton of talent to graduation or the NFL..

We all should have known what was to come later on in the year when ASU went into the Big House and handed Big Blue a loss that will not soon be forgotten on the first day on the season. While this most memorable season as already come and gone you still continue to hear critics wanting a playoff system implemented now. I just do not get it. It seemed to me that almost every single Saturday this year was a playoff. It sure felt like it with stunning upsets and overtime thrillers becoming almost a given on any given Saturday.

What a year.....

If anyone was fortunate enough to watch the LSU vs. Florida Gators game this past Saturday night, you would have found many, pretty straight forward, answer's as to why we do not need a playoff system implemented. I ask you what would be the mindset of a coach like Les Miles who knows that a system is in place to essentially almost reward a team for not taking that extra chance. Does he have his team go for it and fourth down ?..5 times in a row nonetheless? Right now each and every game played is essentially a playoff game as one loss at any point in the season could derail all hopes of a BCS birth. Save the playoffs for March...

This list was garnered from the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia. Only Arizona, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, and Tulsa have eclipsed 150-points in at least one game. Georgia Tech is the only team to ever record over 200 points in one game, occurring in 1916 against Cumberland. Yikes!!

While the Wisconsin Badgers football team was busy scoring on Washington State earlier this year, a young couple was busy scoring in the bathroom at Camp Randall Stadium.
According to UW Police Officer Gerard Pehler, he was assisting a fan who had fallen due to heat exhaustion when a bystander approached and asked him, "Can you do anything about two having sex in the women's restroom stall?"
"They're going at it pretty good," added the fan.

Not only are the pair facing up to 90 days in jail and up to $1,000 fine for a disorderly conduct rap, but they may lose their Badger season tickets, as well.

Because the UW has a policy in place to revoke season tickets of people who cause disturbances, the officer asked couple to produce their tickets and the man was able to find his -- the seats were in section KK -- but the woman couldn't find hers, what with her pants being inside out.

A judge sentenced former Northern Colorado backup punter Mitch Cozad to seven years in prison Tuesday for stabbing a rival in what prosecutors said was a brutal attempt to take over the starter's role.

Prosecutors said Cozad ambushed starting punter Rafael Mendoza on the night of Sept. 11, 2006. Mendoza was left with a deep gash in his kicking leg but later returned to the team.
Cozad was convicted in August of second-degree assault but acquitted of the more serious charge of attempted first-degree murder.

Cozad, 22, of Wheatland, Wyo., could have faced up to 16 years in prison on the assault conviction.

In related news this might be a blessing in disguise for Cozad as a scout for Warner Bros., has pitched him the next role if Friday the 13th Part 34. The plot calls for Jason to come back again from the dead and try out for the New York Jets punter role...Do I hear the Academy calling?

For Fans residing in towns like Boulder, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Champaign, Berkeley, College Park and Manhattan well you probably still have a bit of a hang over from the late night celebrations that took place this past Saturday. On the other hand, it was a day to forgot for those team on the losing end of the scoreboard as dreams of playing in the BCS Championship game took a serious backseat to those in the ranks of the still unbeaten. The University of Cincinnati is where the wheel of Double D's college career has finally stopped. This after a much heated battle between his former employer in ND and a short courtship with the folks in corn invested Dekalb. Official word came late on Thursday night that ND, after having a very brief discussion with DD, would allow him a to be fully released of his scholarship only if he picked a school that was not on their schedule in the next three years.

Jones was a Parade All-American at Morgan Park High School of Chicago and was rated No. 33 on USA Today's list of the top 100 prep players in the country.
Of Jones, Kelly told the Enquirer "He's athletic. He can run it and he can throw it. In this day and age, we see that position requires more than a guy who can just drop back [and throw]. He has to be able to do things with his feet."

Jones will have to pay his own way at the university for the fall quarter because the program currently has no scholarships to offer according to the report.

On September 14, 2007 Demetrius Jones did not board a bus for the trip to play Michigan. Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis issued a statement saying, "At 2:30 today, while boarding the bus to Michigan, I was notified that Demetrius Jones had decided not to make the trip. I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts." The next day, it was reported that he had enrolled at Northern Illinois University. The departure is the second inside of one year for a Notre Dame quarterback since Zach Frazer transferred to Connecticut.

Well look no further all of life's mysterious answer's are right below...or @ least one of them...

The mighty Broncos of Boise State University play on the world's only radical, other-worldly blue field. WHY??? The quality of color selection was affirmed by Mother Nature shortly after its installation in 1986 when passing flocks of migrating geese repeatedly landed in accidental mass suicides, apparently mistaking the field for a beautiful blue lake. Shortly thereafter the grounds keepers began covering the field when not in use, to prevent the aforementioned bird crash deaths and grisly clean-up efforts. No matter how many geese had to die, removing the beloved "Smurf Turf" was never considered. It was reinstalled in 1996, then replaced with identically colored AstroPlay synthetic grass in 2002.

With Smurf Turf in place, the Boise State football program has enjoyed a meteoric rise to dominance, ascending from the I-AA Big Sky conference to I-A superiority in the Western Athletic Conference in just eight short years -- a huge achievement. Over the last three years, Boise State has gone 33-6 -- 12-1 and 13-1 in the last two seasons -- averaging 42 points per contest. That's better than all three of the most recent National Champions USC (29-9), Ohio State (32-7), and LSU (31-9). Argue all you want that Boise State is in a weak conference. Crazy Lee Corso Pisses off Gamecock Faithful....

Last Saturday on Gameday the team aired a video of Steve Spurrier calling out Lee Corso for stating that the Ball Coach would never win an SEC title if he coached there for 400 years. The video (below) was kind of cheesy and seemed more like a fund-raising tool, but you could tell Corso was a bit ticked off. He didn't even smile after Herbstreit gave him his pateneted pat on the back.Well USC has upped the ante. They've created a website that features the video and a game where you can throw footballs at Corso's head, and the Gameday Crew isn't too happy about it.

For those of you that tune in every Sat morning to watch Gameday on ESPN take notice that the crew now is secured by 360 degrees of black netting around them for protection from the various objects that fans hurl there way. A few weeks ago when Corso put on the Southern Cal gear in support of them beating Nebraska in Nebraska, fans starting throwing corn @ the entire crew..

I have zero idea why USC is still the #1 team in all of the land. It took a last second missed FG attempt by a Ball State team with grade school level talent @ best and before this they beat the ever talented Idaho ass-vandals. Comon. The Tigers deserve to be the #1 team is the land. period..... USC has been the trendy media darling the best few years and have had a tremendous run. They had Reggie "All Purpose" Bush and the ever so sexy, love me, want me, shower me with kisses Mr. Matt Leinart. They play a shitty non-conference scedule and PAC-10 talent/teams overall is much weaker in terms talent recruited. When LSU & Florida meet in BR in October, the winner of this game is going to have the inside track and a shot @ either USC or Oklahoma for the BCS title game. Keep in mind that this LSU team is the ONLY team is the current top 5 that has a victory over a top ten team as they whipped a V-Tech who was ranked #9 @ the time.

Keep these gaudy stats in mind as well. LSU's defense remains No. 1 in the nation in four categories after holding South Carolina to 261 total yards in a 28-16 win Saturday. The Tigers are No. 1 in scoring defense (5.75 points a game), total defense (161.5 yards a game), rushing defense (26.75 yards a game) and pass efficiency defense (67.69 rating).

Save the date. LSU and Florida will play in a rare prime time slot on CBS at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, CBS announced on Monday. It will be the Tigers' first night time kickoff in the regular season on one of the three major, non-cable networks since they lost to No. 4 Alabama 24-7 in the 1981 season opener in Tiger Stadium.

Yikes! Another player has decided to leave Notre Dame....Konrad Reuland, one of the nation's top tight end prospects when he signed at Notre Dame two years ago, has decided to leave the Irish football team.

Basically, it came down to the fact I wasnt happy with where I was, the 6-foot-6, 255-pound sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., told the Tribune via cell phone Monday. It was combination of things, not just football, not just the school. I wanted badly to be happy again, and felt this move was the best thing for me.
I realize Notre Dame is a very special place. I wouldnt have picked it from all the schools in the country if it wasnt. But it didnt work out for me on a personal level. I felt the change was the best.

"I don't have any idea where I'll end up," Reuland said. "I'm kind of looking forward to going through recruiting again. I want to pick the best school for me for the long run, not the one that feels good today."

Coach Nutt and the Arkansas Football program have had their fair share of "off-season" distractions. After leading the program to a 10 win season and the SEC West title, Nutt and the entire AD dept., cannot get a break. Leaving is QB Mitch Mustain who went 8-0 as a starter for the Razorbacks last season, for the sunny skies of USC. What is left is a program in tumoil. But why?

These days, Freedom-of-Infomania is all the rage in Fayetteville. The university has received so many FOI requests in recent months, White says, it has had to hire an additional attorney.
Fans and reporters are not the only ones requesting information. Mustain also submitted an FOI request, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. The quarterback asked for phone records for Houston Nutt; Danny Nutt, the running backs coach and head coach's brother; and the soon to be retired AD Broyles.

According to the Democrat-Gazette, Nutt exchanged more than 1,000 text messages with the cellphone of Donna Bragg, a television news anchor in Arkansas, from Nov. 30 to Jan. 11, including one of 19 minutes before the start of the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1. Nutt wrote an open letter to fans, saying there was nothing inappropriate about his relationship with Bragg.

Nutt says the two are friends and that wrong conclusions have been drawn from the volume of text messages. He says many of those text messages were simply one- and two-word responses to questions. Bottom line is the city and the fan base in general have to relax. SEC fans in general are the most passionate in all of the land but this is taking it just too far. It is not as if your team posted a 1-10 record last year. They won the SEC West along with 10 games for the first time since 1999. Of the four losses all of them were to teams ranked in the top 5 in the final AP poll. Nutt was also name SEC coach of year and you have legit shot at having a Heisman Trophy winner in RB D. MCFadden. Future still is bright.

Comon Bro! LSU QB Ryan Perrilloux has been suspended indefinitely after being busted for passing a fake ID in an attempt to get into the Hollywood Casino in Baton Rouge.

Perrilloux was cited for one count of misrepresentation to gain access and released, said Baton Rouge Police Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said. Police were called to the casino about 5 p.m. Saturday by the boat’s security guards, McKneely said.

Perrilloux presented his brother's ID to prove that he was at least 21.

After getting caught by casino security, it's rumored that he threw down the "don't you know who I am?"

This guy is way too good and this incident too will pass. Look for Perrilloux to be brought back into team drills after a short cool down period. However it looks as if Coach Miles is losing control over this team as this is just one of many infractions that have dealt a blow to his credibility since the season concluded. Get this team on a shorter leash Les please or you could be on your way out should LSU not win the SEC West.....

Their are some truly classic collage football uniforms out there that just encompass and capture the tradition of this great American sport the minute you see them. Then their are some that make you wonder if the designer might be Bobby Trendy. Below is a short list of the top three great uniforms of all time and the bottom of the barrel, worst uniforms, what were you thinking when you created these , of all time. Enjoy!

The Worst:

#1) The University of Oregon Ducks: My oh my! Produced by OU alum Phil Knight of Nike the team often takes the field with a new uniform each game. In the 2005 season, they used nine uniform combinations, including white jerseys and white pants,yellow and green, yellow and yellow, green and green, white and green, green and yellow,white and yellow, black and black, and white and black, which they wore in the 2005 Holiday Bowl against the University of Oklahoma. New uniforms were introduced for the 2006 season, allowing up to 384 different combinations of jerseys, pants, and helmets. Please do not stare at the players for too long if you have been drinking. Consider yourself warned!

#2.) Wyoming — What can an all brown uniform do for you? Well nothing but make you throw-up. The players look like 12 little shit turds running around the field. Was the AD taking a large dump when he thought of this? I think so. What the?

#3.) Baylor — The all-green uniforms look like something out of the Jolly Green Giant’s closet. Pick one helmet or another, too. The QB under center looks like a tall piece of asparagus. Speaking of asparagus I'm hungry. What's the deal with Waco, TX?

The Best:

#1. ) Penn State: A throw back to the good 'ol days when Jo Pa was a young en. Simple yet sexy at the same time.

#2. ) Harvard — The black-and-white stripe down the center of the helmet is nice, but nothing beats the school motto on the shoulders — in Latin. The Crimson can run over and educate you at the same time.

#3.) Tie: Michigan and Florida State: Michigan — Maize and blue and winged helmets. Enough said. Florida State-The best helmets in the game bar none. Plus they have the cowgirls in the stands.

There are die-hard fans, then there are really gay fans as witnessed above. Drew and Lisa Medcalf of Tallahassee, FL fall into the latter category. They’ve painted their house down-the-middle, one half puke Gator Orange and Blue and the other half with wipe my ass Seminole Garnet & Gold as part of winning a contest sponsored by The Home Depot and Glidden Paints. The Medcalf’s won the team colors paint-job, a $5,000 gift card to The Home Depot and, thankfully for their neighbors, a post-game paint job in the color of their choice.

They also simultaneously managed to drop the value of all of their neighbors homes by 30%. Thanks Medcalfs for showing the world just how retarted human beings can be sometime. Next time I'm in the area I will make sure to swing by so I can pee all over your house.

Florida might not miss a beat on offense as they lost 4 year starter Chris Leak, who looks good in a Chicago Bears Uniform and has a legitimate shot to give weed smoking hippie Orton his walking papers, but their Defense looks shakey at best. UF lost a total of 9 starters on the this side of the ball, which will be exposed early on in the season. Still overall though the team to beat.

LSU will start QB Matt Flynn who exploited the Miami D 2 years ago in route to a 41-3 beating of The U. Ryan Perrilloux the more talented and elusive QB will get the opportunity to win the job but has had to deal with some bad PR as he was implicated in a Federal probe involving an alleged counterfeiting ring. This dude's the real deal if he can get his act straightened out.

One of the best deep passers of recent memory goes to Andrew Walters who was under center @ ASU a few years back. Walters did not get a ton of hype or media attention as he played on a sub-par team and most of the PAC-1o games started @ 10 EST. A few to watch going into this season include: Andre' Woodson, Sr., Kentucky who lead the SEC in passing yardage, Brian Brohm, Sr., Louisville who has developed into a solid pro-style QB and positioned himself to be one of the first QB's taken in next years NFL draft, and Juice Williams, So., Illinois. Juice has created quite a stir in central Illinois as he could be one of the most exciting players to watch on a fast rising team. Seven of his nine touchdown passes last year went for at least 31 yards. He became the first Illinois quarterback to throw two touchdown passes of more than 65 yards in one game when he tossed a 79-yarder and a 69-yarder against Syracuse. Williams' completions went an average distance of 14.5 yards. Of the players on this list, only Brohm had a higher average per completion.

Jimmy Harbaugh has Surfaced!!!

Good 'Ol Mr. Jimmy Harbaugh. I remember Jimmy and all of those interceptions that he threw during his tenure as a Chicago Bear. The Viking's sure missed Jimmy when he left as he chucked more completions to the purple people eaters CB's then he did to Bears WR's (insert wounded duck picture here). Well now Jimmy has found himself again and gained back all of that confidence as he has been making waves as the Stanford Ball Coach in Palo Alto. Late last month, Jimmy suggested that Pete Caroll was leaving after the upcoming season for another stint in the NFL which has been hinted at for quite some time. Harbaugh also stated the following about UM last week:

Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there,” he said, “but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in and, when they’re in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They’re adulated when they’re playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won’t hire them.”

Jimmy you might want to just shut your trap and relax. Go to the fridge and grab an ice cold Zima, sit back and watch some game tape. You have now just blown your chaces of ever becoming the head coach of UM while simutanelously pissing off the entire USC brass. Final Score USC 87-Stanford Trees -90.
